Rising Tide – 2019 Week 3

Welcome back to Rising Tide, the weekly digest of things I’ve been into this past week and consider worth sharing. Enjoy!

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

– Mary Oliver, from “The Summer Day

1. With the news of Mary Oliver’s passing this week at the age of 83, I encourage you to enjoy a few of her poems. It will not take long to realize her contributions to the world through writing. It is more than just her connections to Ohio, nature, lesbian love, and dogs that make it so easy for me to respect and appreciate her life and work.

When it’s over, I want to say all my life
I was a bride married to amazement.
I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.

– Mary Oliver, from “When Death Comes”

2. Fordlândia is a “lost city” in Brazil that was originally created by Henry Ford. You can get the gist of the story here. Or you can go down the rabbit hole as I did by

Employee housing in Fordlandia, circa 1933

3. Local BS is a blog post I wrote this week. Here’s a hint… BS doesn’t stand for bullshit, until the small disclaimer at the end.

5. Speaking of Petoskey, did you hear Mike Posner’s shout out in his new song, Noah’s Ark? Listen up at 3:23.

4. Coastline, is a typeface designed from projections of future geography if all the ice in the world melted. Get the background story, the details, and the font.

5. …and that eventually lead me to this cool little video called Sea Chair:

6. Here’s a playlist of songs I’ve discovered or have been listening to a lot this week.

Two of the tracks were added this morning after seeing a pretty cool lineup with Weakened Friends and Punch Drunk Tagalongs at Happy Dog last night.

7. In my search for a free, unbiased, daily news brief, I’ve subscribed to Morning Brew. So far, so good. It covers a little bit of everything that could possibly be of interest, but it doesn’t bog you down with details you don’t want. It’s worth checking out.

Well, I think that’s it for this week! Until next time…
