Welcome back to Rising Tide, the weekly digest of things I’ve been into this past week and consider worth sharing. Enjoy!
1. Headspace is the meditation app I use, love, and suggest to ANYONE! So far in 2019, it’s helped me 33 days in a row! Even if you’re not “into stuff like that,” giving it a try for just 10 minutes might change your mind.
2. Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet is one of the books I finished this week. Rilke writes 10 letters encouraging an aspiring writer to evaluate why he wants to be a poet. An insightful, short read, I recommend it to writers, creatives, or anyone trying to figure out or justify what they want to or are doing with their life.
3. The Library. When was the last time you utilized yours? If it’s been a while, know that it is so much more than borrowing a book. You can get ebooks, magazines, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, and more all on your phone! Let me know if you want an intro. I would be thrilled to help reintroduce you!
4. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)’s OpenCourseWare (OCW) has me designing my own Liberal Arts degree…for free! From business to sciences, art to society, there are so many course options! Take your pick!
5. The 50 Best Film Scores of All Time has been streaming one after the next after the next all week. Most of the soundtracks match a film on the 501 Must See Movies list. Some of my favorites so far include:
I also agree with Ted Gioia (@tedgioia), jazz critic and music historian, that the list “ignores the first 30 years of sound movies.” What about Nosferatu, Metropolis, and Shoulder Arms?
Speaking of, if you have 45 minutes and want a couple good laughs…
6. Here’s a playlist of songs I’ve discovered or have been listening to a lot this week. Pardon a couple film scores carrying over from #3 above.
Well, I think that’s it for this week! Until next time…
