Happy New Year! Welcome to 2022, another year of Rising Tide! Thanks for kicking off your new year here! Rising Tide is a digest of things worth sharing. Enjoy this list of books, blog posts, podcasts, music, and more!
1. From the likes of Pablo Picasso and Harriet Tubman to Anne Boleyn and Judy Garland, here are some recent discoveries in art, war, history, and more. Enjoy these 99 fascinating finds, as shared by Smithsonian Magazine.
2. Are you a “New Year, New You” kind of person? Or could you care less about resolutions? Either way, a new you can start any day! 30 Days to Better Habits is a free 30-day email course by James Clear. New York Times bestselling author of the book, Atomic Habits (★★★★ from me).
3. Speaking of James Clear, take a listen to his two episodes on Brene Brown‘s Unlocking Us (Or Dare to Lead) podcast. I haven’t felt spoken directly to in a long time. There are so many applicable and easy to implement habit forming tips (i.e. motion vs. action). I’m already seeing a change in my every day.
4. My favorite read this month was A Man Called Ove by Frederik Backman ★★★★★. Backman has a unique writing style that I really found interesting. By the end, I was completely in love with Ove and the whole story. I wanted to give him a big ol’ hug!
5. This year, I have three daily books going. Each has a short poetic, introspective, or motivational page to read:
- The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday
- The Daily Laws by Robert Greene
- A Year with Rumi (inspired by the front desk at Acupuncture First)
Reading each every morning has been a great meditation and helps me start the day off on the right foot with a few specific intentions.
6. Letters of Note has been a fun discovery recently. In a time where technology rules and handwriting and snail mail risk extinction, this “letter museum” of sorts shares some really interesting correspondences had throughout history. The website is such an extensive archive, and the Instagram account gives interesting daily samplings. Dig in to Letterheady too for archives of letterheads of famous folks.
7. For some absolutely unbelievable satellite photos of a wide variety of views things from across the world. From bustling cities to remote places in nature, Over View is dialed in, to say the least. Follow their daily photos, search by keyword, or find images by map! (The header photo of this post is of trucks at the Port of LA.)
8. When I saw a headline that read, “An album made entirely of endangered bird sounds beat Taylor Swift on a top 50 chart,” I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry. This album definitely makes you feel like you can do both. Beautiful yet haunting; enjoy.
9. Scanning through local radio stations recently, I randomly came across 88.7 WJCU, an indie station from John Carroll University, a local school here in Cleveland, OH. From throwback favorites to new unknown discoveries, I have been loving having my car radio tuned in! I first heard some of the songs in the monthly playlist below on the 88.7!
10. And here’s the playlist for the month:
That’s all I have for now. See you in February!
Until next time…
