KOKOSING IV Barge, Then and Now

That was then…

Prior to my current job at The Great Lakes Towing Company and Great Lakes Shipyard, I worked at Moran Iron Works. One of the my first projects on the job was the construction of two deck barges for Durocher Marine, a division of Kokosing.

Deeply involved in all facets of the project (estimating, project management, marketing, customer relations, safety and compliance, and more), its successful completion is one of the highlights of my professional career, to date.

Fast forward five years.

After the barges were completed and delivered to Durocher, they have since contributed to some interesting projects. Some jobs include:

  • Installing cable for the Block Island Wind Project, the first commercial offshore wind farm in the United States
  • Inspecting, surveying, and removing cables in the Straits of Mackinac

…and this is now.

The KOKOSING IV barge is now due for its 5-year haul out and inspection. I currently work at The Great Lakes Towing Company and Great Lakes Shipyard, where the barge will be worked on. Watching an up close and personal haul out of the same barge, five years later, is a pretty unique and impressive experience.

This is one of my favorite things about the maritime. It is a large industry, covering every corner of the globe. Yet everything is connected somehow.

Everything has a then… and a now.
