Rising Tide – 2019 Week 1

Welcome to the second Rising Tide, the first one of 2019! If you’re new here, this is a weekly digest of things I’m currently into, an ongoing list of books, music, podcasts, learning opportunities, products, and more that I have discovered over the last few days and deem shareable.

As always, I hope you enjoy!

A rising tide lifts all boats.

1. 2018 was a year full of travel, good music, a big move, and more! Here’s my year in review.

2. If you still think 2018 was a bust, are you willing to let me try to change your mind? How the world got better in 2018, in 15 charts definitely puts things in a different perspective!

(Sidebar… if you find the above charts even remotely interesting, you should play around on Gapminder (Take the test!) and consider the book, Factfulness, which was one of my favorite reads last year.)

3. One of my favorite discoveries this week stemmed from listening to Book Fishing In America on NPR’s This American Life. It didn’t take me long to get over my embarrassment of never before hearing of Richard Brautigan and borrow a copy of Trout Fishing in America (which is not exactly about trout fishing).

4. I’ve joined Goodreads to help track my progress of reading (at least) 52 books this year. You can follow along here.

5. Chapter 2 of John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row blew me away and has taken a place in my top ten most incredible pages of written word. Even out of context of the book, you’ll find it impressive.

The word is a symbol and a delight which sucks up men and scenes, trees, plants, factories, and Pekinese. Then the Thing becomes the Word and back to Thing again, but warped and woven into a fantastic pattern.

6. And there’s this amazing article about a drone delivery a human kidney for transplant.

7. Here’s a playlist of songs I’ve discovered or have been listening to a lot this week.

Well, I think that’s it for this week! Until next time…
