Rising Tide – 2021 October

Welcome to another edition of Rising Tide, a digest of things worth sharing! Enjoy this month’s list of books, blog posts, movies, music, and more!

To watch

1. How many more books will you read in your lifetime? As an avid reader, this feels like a scary question.

(Don’t blink, or you’ll miss the few video clips of Elliot Bay Book Company! A little nod to them, as I went there during my visit to Seattle, as mentioned in last month’s Rising Tide.)

2. We watched Aliens this week! I was excited to check another one off my 501 Must See Movies list. We were admittedly impressed with the 35 year old special effects and pleasantly surprised by how good of a movie it was overall. Recommended “classic” film!

To read

3. After watching the abovementioned bookstore video, I decided to purge some of my To-Read list. I got rid of some books that no longer had meaning and decided that I wanted to add some of my friends’ favorite books to my list. I reached out via social media, asking connections the following question:

What is the best book you have ever read? (Don’t overthink it. Just process for 10 seconds or so, and answer with what comes to mind first.)

I got some interesting feedback! I look forward to reading these! You should weigh in too. Let me know, what is the best book you have ever read?

4. Speaking of books, here are some I have enjoyed over the last month…a lot of 5/5 stars!

5. Download the The Library Extension web app! If you are browsing books online, you can check your library’s book and ebook availability. Borrow instead of buy!

6. This article about one original Andy Warhol mixed in with 999 forgeries is a bizarre yet hilarious read!

7. Here are a few recent pieces I have written this past month:

To visit

8. Last month, I spent a week out in the Pacific Northwest. I shared some highlights in September’s Rising Tide. I spent another week out there this month, so here are some additions to my PNW recommendations:

I’ll be vacationing to Puerto Rico in November, so look forward to more travel recommendations to come!

To listen

9. I randomly discovered The Blues Kitchen Radio podcast, associated with The Blues Kitchen, a Cajun BBQ bar and restaurant and blues bar in London. On the podcast, two guys chat about and play everything from 1930s music to new releases. There is just the right amount of talking to provide background, and the majority of each episode is playing killer blues tunes. I’ve been loving it!

10. My acupuncturist introduced me to the band, Khruangbin. I love how their music can fit just about any situation: studying, cooking, working, dancing! I recommend any of their albums. You can get a good intro of their style by watching their Tiny Desk Concert:

Also, they’ll be playing at the Agora Theater in Cleveland in December if anyone wants to go!

11. And, as always, here’s is a playlist of music I have enjoyed this month:

That’s all I have for now! Until next time…
