Welcome to the April issue of Rising Tide, a monthly digest of things I deem worth sharing. Enjoy my recommended books, blog posts, podcasts, music, products, and more.
1. If you have followed this blog for long enough, you will know that I am a big fan of e e cummings and read his poetry often. “what if a much of a which of a wind” is a recent new one and fast favorite:
2. Following the trend of most libraries nationwide, the New York Public Library system ended late fees. Some of the discoveries that ensued as a result are worth hearing. One of my favorites is that a library in Queens received a package containing “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” by James Hilton. The novella was checked out in 1970 from an address that is now a shopping plaza.
3. Last month, I shared a new magazine discovery, The Sun Magazine. This month, it’s The Believer.
Recommended reading in the latest issue:
- An Interview with Jackson Galaxy, cat behaviorist
- Hold on, a comic by Angie Kang
- Snow Theory, a poem by Ocean Vuong
4. Speaking of Ocean Vuong, the Mothers & Sons episode of Glennon Doyle’s We Can Do Hard Things podcast is very moving. Ocean Vuong is the guest, and Chase Melton, Glennon Doyle’s son, is also on. The three have a great conversation about relationships between mothers and children, empathy and connection, and more.
5. Jon Batiste! I’ve been a fan since I read his wife, Suleika Jaouad’s book, Between Two Kingdoms. It was super exciting to clean house at the Grammy’s. Here is some Jon Batiste content:
- FREEDOM – 64th GRAMMY Awards Performance
- 10 Things Jon Batiste Can’t Live Without
- Jazz Selections: Music From and Inspired by Soul, the Disney Movie
6. And, lastly, here is this month’s playlist:
April was a busy month for me, so that’s is all I have for now. Until next time…
