Why Do Cicadas Sing?

During a camping trip to Mammoth Caves last summer, Sarah and I were snuggled up in our sleeping bags laying in our tent one night. The sounds of the cicadas buzzing inspired musing about how amazing nature is. A sucker for poetic devices, I eventually paired cicadas with singing. The phrase “Why do cicadas sing?” quickly became the theme of our weekend and prompted a whole series of animals and their alliterative activities. We handwrote a whole long list in a notebook and joked about how we would write a book some day.

Flashforward to year and a half later.

In preparation for this holiday season, discussions over a couple of cocktails and some vinyl records on Thanksgiving evening encouraged us to bring back the cicadas. So we dusted off the notebook, had a sleepover weekend with our nephew, mixed our writing with his illustrations, and “published” a book.

As a holiday gift from all of us (Kirsten, Sarah, and Paco), “turn the pages” below, and enjoy!
